A personal note from Raymond Blanchard, Board Member:

Why did I, and why should you, become a member of the League of Women Voters? Why should you encourage friends and community leaders to join this organization dedicated to intelligent analysis of the issues that affect our lives?

The simple answer is found in our newspapers, on television and heard on radio daily: we only receive partial and filtered news. The League is an unbiased searcher of truth on political and social issues that attempts to fairly inform the public and elected officials.

In 2005, as an example, the New York State League’s legislative agenda examined issues and made recommendations in the following areas of New York State government:

• Alternatives to Incarceration, including reforming the Rockefeller Drug Laws
• Court Restructuring resulting in a more equitable and efficient system
• Health Care coverage for all
• Judicial Selection based on achievement, not popularity
• Equity in School Financing for both taxpayers and students, adjusted for student need and regional cost
• Reproductive Rights for women
• State Budget restraint and meaningful reform

These are just a few of the everyday issues that control the way we live our lives. The League’s efforts are laudable as are its accomplishments, but it can do better with greater presence and participation.

It is about education and advocacy. It is about recognizing the following facts: 1) as a society, we are losing our freedoms, 2) we are not fully informed about these and other issues, and 3) numbers count and a collective intelligent voice can make a difference.

We need your voice to swell the ranks of people who care about the future of this country, men and women alike.

Getting involved with the League requires as much time as you want to give. Do a little or a lot. Stay informed and read the monthly bulletin, or pitch in:

  • monitoring key issues at the county and state level

  • organizing and participating in League sponsored events

  • speaking out on important League supported issues

  • writing articles for the monthly bullein

  • registering people to vote

  • helping at polling stations

  • organizing political debates and issue forums

We cannot do this important work without you!
