President's Message

I was out walking early one morning a few weeks ago and saw and heard the OGS garbage trucks coming down the road. Several men were collecting trash barrels and emptying them as the truck slowly passed by, and I looked up to see a woman driving the truck. I was exhilarated and excited - like a 3 year old - I waved to her and smiled. And she smiled back. It seemed to me like progress - to see a woman running the truck and the route. I don’t know the mechanics of trash collection but I am suspicious that the driver sets the pace and manages everything. "Good for her," I thought!

I live in a suburban enclave; shop at an inner city supermarket; use the local library with a mixed clientele. But when am I surprised and pleased to see someone “else” there? How often do I experience others? What are the circumstances that permit me to see another in a different way? When and how can I increase these opportunities? Is it important or condescending? Do I light a candle or curse the darkness?
