Students Inside Albany

Early in each calendar year, LWV of Albany County (LWVAC) selects one or more Albany County high school students to attend the SIA conference, through an application process.

We reach out to all high schools in the county to alert social studies departments about the opportunity, as well as publishing it in our enews and bulletins.

Students Inside Albany (SIA)

is an annual intensive four-day training conference, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of New York State and free to participants. Held every spring in Albany, it is designed to immerse students in the process by which public policy is proposed, enacted and changed in New York State and educate them about how they can influence and affect this process.

Students also observe Assembly and Senate sessions and shadow both their Assembly members and Senators.

In 2023, Jane Fanning, from Guilderland High School, represented LWVAC at the SIA Conference.

She was nominated by teacher Jon Kauffman and recommended by teacher and Model U.N. advisor Frederick "Derick" Kopff. She attended LWVAC’s annual meeting in June, 2023 where she delivered a lively and uplifting recap of her experience.

You can read Ms. Fanning's speech here , or watch it on our YouTube Channel.
